Happy Friday! Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Here's what's breaking this morning: |
Nicole Fallert here, bringing you the news to know on Friday, from a bit more time to stave off a government shutdown to more winter weather headed for the East Coast this weekend. 🎤And music's biggest night is this weekend. |
A shutdown could still come |
Republicans and Democrats struck a deal Thursday evening to fund the Department of Homeland Security for two weeks. The deal represented a big win for Democrats, who've been uniformly pushing for widespread reforms to President Donald Trump's immigration enforcement campaign. |
It's still unlikely the compromise can avert a partial shutdown, though. The funding package has to go back to the House of Representatives, which has been in recess and where a thin margin and conservative hardliners could pose challenges to it surviving. |
In a Thursday night interview with USA TODAY, House Speaker Mike Johnson acknowledged the "logistics are a challenge" for completely averting a shutdown. |
