'We will be the last mass shooting'

Less than a week after 17 people died in one of the worst mass school shootings in modern U.S. history, a new voice in the debate over gun violence is emerging. Poised, passionate — and young, the students who survived the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., are making impassioned pleas for legislation to regulate guns. Student Emma Gonzalez became a viral sensation Saturday as she took on President Trump, the National Rifle Association, politicians and every argument against tightening gun laws.

After Mueller indictments, Trump 'hoax' claim in choppy water

After Russia special counsel Robert Mueller filed criminal charges against 13 Russian nationals Friday for meddling in the 2016 presidential election, President Trump's dismissal of the Russian interference as a "hoax" hit choppy waters. Trump's national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, added a few waves as the highest ranking White House official to say flatly on Saturday that evidence of Russian election meddling "is now incontrovertible."

Everything you need to know about the Olympics this weekend

The Winter Olympics action was somewhat mellow Sunday in Pyeongchang — the biggest story may have been NBC hiring figure skater Adam Rippon as a correspondent for the remainder of the Games —  but the United States managed to get back on the podium. Skier Nick Goepper picked up his  second career Olympic medal in men's slopestyle, laying down a third run that scored 93.60 to get him the silver. Oystein Braaten of Norway won gold with a 95; Alex Beaulieu-Marchand of Canada grabbed bronze with a 92.4. In other news, many American fans have been rooting against Lindsey Vonn after her comments about President Trump.

'We will definitely not shut up and dribble'

Against the backdrop of NBA All-Star weekend, LeBron James and Kevin Durant explained why they refuse to "stick to sports" and responded to Fox News host Laura Ingraham's comments that the two should "shut up and dribble" rather than criticize President Trump. "To me, it was racist ," Durant told USA TODAY Sports Friday night. James also admitted he thought there was a racial element to the comments. Late Friday, Ingraham tweeted an invitation to James to appear on her show.

'Black Panther' roars to box-office record

Black Panther delivered on the hype at the box office. The high-profile black superhero movie bypassed early expectations, raking in $192 million in ticket sales for the three-day weekend, according to studio estimates and comScore. Including Monday's Presidents' Day holiday, the film is expected to earn $218 million for the four-day weekend. The film set a new record for a February opening and is Marvel's second-best North American opening, comScore says, behind only The Avengers in 2012 ($207.4 million).

Violent brawls turn Carnival trip into 'cruise from hell'

Passengers called it the "cruise from hell." People vacationing on the Carnival Legend cruise ship this week in the South Pacific had their trip turned upside down thanks to a series of violent brawls — including two that were captured on camera — that seemed to transform the ship from a paradise into a fight club. Carnival apologized and offered all guests aboard a 25% credit to make up for the issues.
