It's Wednesday, Short Listers. R. Kelly's back in jail, Alex Trebek has a heartbreaking announcement and Trump may be "very disappointed" in North Korea. I'm Ashley, and here's the day's top news. |
But first, my bad: An item was included in yesterday's Short List about President Donald Trump rolling back Obama-era gun regulations. That happened – but it happened in 2017. Sorry for any confusion that might have caused. |
'Jeopardy!' host Alex Trebek: I have stage 4 cancer |
Alex Trebek, the longtime "Jeopardy!" host, announced Wednesday that he has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The 78-year-old announced the news on the game show's YouTube page Wednesday, adding, "I wanted to be the one to pass along this information." "Just like 50,000 people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer," he said. "Now normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I'm going to fight this and I'm going to keep working." |

R. Kelly's behind bars after GMA |
R. Kelly pushed back on sexual abuse claims in a wild interview on Wednesday's "CBS This Morning," during which he stood, screamed and cried. It was the first time Kelly addressed claims against him since the debut of the explosive Lifetime documentary "Surviving R. Kelly" and his later arrest on 10 counts of criminal sexual abuse. CBS' Gayle King was applauded for her composure during the interview, especially after Kelly got up from his chair, screamed, "Y'all trying to kill me ," and pounded his chest. Kelly ended up in jail (again) that day over unpaid child support. |

Depressed? Snort this, perhaps |
A new medication related to the party drug "Special K" could revolutionize how we treat depression affecting more than 16 million Americans. A Johnson & Johnson subsidiary won fast-track approval from the FDA to use the drug esketamine for adults who've tried at least two other antidepressants without success. Esketamine, given as a nasal spray, is a cousin of ketamine, the once-popular recreational drug. Studies show ketamine's effectiveness against depression, and ketamine clinics already exist across the nation. |

Russia nabbed almost 600 foreign spies last year, Putin says |
Russia's security service uncovered nearly 600 operatives for foreign intelligence agencies in 2018, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday, claiming ramped-up efforts to steal Russian secrets. Without singling out any country by name, Putin said Russia's special services uncovered 129 officers and 465 agents. Last year, the security service arrested Paul Whelan, an American citizen, on charges of suspicion of espionage. |

Pot got legal fast. There may be risks |
In less than 25 years, marijuana has gone from illegal everywhere in the U.S. to legal for at least some uses in all but four states. But as cultural acceptance of cannabis grows, opponents are warning of potential downsides . Marijuana might be safer than alcohol or tobacco, they say. But that doesn't make it safe. Doctors, police, insurers and parents are pointing to stories and studies that link the drug to suicide, schizophrenia and car crashes. |
Is North Korea testing rockets? Trump 'would be very disappointed' |
President Trump said Wednesday he would be "very disappointed" in Kim Jong Un if North Korea were rebuilding a rocket site just days after the two flaunted a strong relationship at a summit in Vietnam . Satellite images this week suggest North Korea started rapidly rebuilding the launch site just days after the summit between Trump and Kim failed to achieve a breakthrough on denuclearizing North Korea. The images were taken on March 2. |
