The Short List

Saturday, January 22

Good morning, friends of The Short List! It's John, and we're in the thick of another dreary January. Here are some hot storiesπŸ”₯ from the USA TODAY Network to help you weather the storm.

COVID test concerns: USA TODAY's Grace Hauck has been hot on the trail of the Center for COVID Control, a nationwide chain of coronavirus testing sites that is now the subject of several federal and state investigations . Test takers have told authorities they received delayed test results, no results or multiple conflicting results, among other concerns. But until recently, the company's founders have been unabashed on social media about their growing wealth, flashing a Lamborghini car and a luxury mansion.

Turning Tides: On Georgia's Sapelo Island, the historic Gullah Geechee community are direct descendants of West Africans brought over for their expertise in rice and indigo cultivation during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Centuries later, they're fighting dual challenges: rising sea levels and outsiders who want to develop their ancestral lands. The Geechee say they have a plan: Return the land to those who cultivated it.

We are Latinx: USA TODAY's Cristina Silva delves into the term "Latinx," a term that describes people of Latin American origin or descent. Younger generations and many Latino celebrities have been championing Latinx identity, which they say acknowledges women and LGBTQ people and challenges male-dominated traditions in Latin America. Critics, however, claim Latinx is a made-up word forced on Latinos and Hispanics by progressive white people.
