For those in the Northeast and Midwest, get ready to see more of the invasive spotted lanternfly – and get ready to take action.

See one? Smash it. From August into September, lanternflies reach full adulthood with their striking spotted wings and black and red coloring. And the Department of Agriculture recommends that if you see one, squish it. Invasive spotted lanternflies are damaging plants and trees in several parts of the Northeast and Midwest. 👏 What you should know.

Hostage rescued in Gaza

A "complex rescue operation" in southern Gaza was a success, the Israeli military said Tuesday. A hostage taken by Hamas-led militants during the Oct. 7 rampage into Israel that ignited the war in Gaza was freed and reunited with his family, officials said. Qaid Farhan Alkadi, 52, a member of Israel's Arab Bedouin minority, was in "normal" medical condition, but he said that other hostages "are suffering," according to officials. About 250 people were taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack, and more than 100 of them remain in the hands of militants, though many are believed to be dead. 👉 Here's the latest.

Could this be summer's last hurrah?

A short-lived but intense blast of heat is scorching portions of the Midwest and Northeast on Tuesday, one that's sending temperatures to "hazardous" levels in cities such as New York, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Hazardous heat: For some folks, it may be the hottest weather of the entire summer, AccuWeather said, as temperatures top out in the upper 90s to the low 100s with the heat index.

And hypothermia? The National Weather Service warned people in Montana to beware of hypothermia if they planned to spend time outdoors, as the first snowflakes of the season are forecast for higher elevations in the state. 🌡️ See the full forecast.
