Wildfires ravage Southern California, where at least two have been killed and thousands have fled their homes. President Joe Biden sat down for an exclusive interview with USA TODAY. And worlds (well, two fictional Philadelphia worlds) collide in a sitcom crossover. |
๐ Hey there! New Short List writer Rebecca Morin here. Lots of news happening this Wednesday. Let's get to it. |
Wildfires rage on in Southern California |
Houses and hillsides in Southern California have been set ablaze as multiple wildfires driven by powerful Santa Ana winds have killed at least two and have caused tens of thousands to flee. |
State of emergency: California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency as firefighters struggled to control the fires, which have all been listed as 0% contained. Joe Biden, who was in Los Angeles on Wednesday, said the government is "prepared to do anything and everything for as long as it takes to contain these fires." |
Multiple fires: It's not just one blaze causing the damage. Three fires have broken out in Los Angeles County since Tuesday. The Palisades Fire has scorched nearly 3,000 acres between the beach towns of Santa Monica and Malibu; the Eaton Fire broke out in Altadena near Pasadena; and a smaller blaze named the Hurst Fire ignited in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley northwest of downtown LA. ๐ Follow today's coverage. | People embrace as they evacuate following powerful winds fueling devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles area, at the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California, on Wednesday. Attorney general to release Trump report on election charges |
Before Donald Trump takes office, Attorney General Merrick Garland will release part of special counsel Jack Smith's report about election interference charges against the president-elect, even as those charges have been dismissed. |
Not the full report: The Justice Department said it would withhold part of the report about Trump's alleged mishandling of classified documents. A federal judge Tuesday blocked the release of the entire report after a request from two of Trump's co-defendants in the documents case. ๐ We break it down here. |
In exclusive sit-down, Biden talks legacy and regrets |
In less than two weeks, President Joe Biden's one-term presidency will come to a close. But before leaving the White House, the 82-year-old president sat down with USA TODAY's Susan Page to discuss what he hopes his legacy will be, the rare compliment Trump gave him and his biggest regrets. |
2024 election: The biggest revelation from the interview? Biden said he believes he could have won his reelection bid. "It's presumptuous to say that, but I think yes," he said. ๐ More from the exclusive interview. | USA TODAY Washington Bureau Chief Susan Page interviews President Joe Biden in the Oval Office on Sunday. Back from winter break: 'Abbott' meets 'Sunny' |
School is back in session. "Abbott Elementary" returns from a winter break tonight with the highly anticipated (at least to me!) crossover episode with "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." I don't know about you, but I've been counting down the days to see two of my favorite shows collide. |
'The Gang' brings mayhem: So what's happening in the episode? All we know is the "Sunny" gang – Charlie, Frank, Dennis, Mac and Dee – show up to volunteer at Abbott, and let's just say a little chaos ensues with their usual shenanigans. Expect a second installment to air later on "Sunny." |
