A decades-old right upended 📰

The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it was a "chaos of emotions" on Capitol Hill this week and more from USA TODAY. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Short List

Saturday, June 25

Good morning, friends of The Short List! This morning, Steve and John are here with the updates.

The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday. The high court ruled the Constitution provided no right to abortion, overturning nearly 50 years of precedent and sending the legality of the procedure to the states to determine. As expected, the hotly awaited decision sparked a firestorm of reaction. USA TODAY published a series of compelling and helpful pieces on the ruling:

🔵 What this means for Americans: Access to abortion could become a patchwork based on where a person lives. In anticipation of the ruling, 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion, according to a study by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights.

Do you know your state's abortion laws? Here's USA TODAY's searchable database of state-by-state abortion limits and protections.

🔵 What's next in the abortion battle? Though the landmark decision will make it more difficult for millions of Americans to obtain abortions, it won't end the legal wrangling over how far conservative states may go to try to curb abortion more broadly. Experts predict new laws and lawsuits will quickly crop up over whether states can clamp down on medication abortions, which account for 54% of terminated pregnancies.

🔵 Anti-abortion groups applaud a victory: Advocates against abortion lauded the decision. But many anti-abortion advocates see the ruling as just the beginning of work to eliminate abortion as an option. Some say they'll be working to get more support for expecting and new parents. Others are gearing up for battles at the state level to enact more restrictions.

🔵 The telling of a deeply personal story: USA TODAY Editor-in-Chief Nicole Carroll made a startling discovery among the papers of her mother, Judy, after she died: a written account of the legal abortion she had in Texas in 1975 , why she made that decision and how it almost killed her. Her mother's memoir also started a difficult, emotional conversation among Nicole and her family. Now Judy's story has been published – just as she had always wanted.
