A growing number of companies are holding back on layoffs, deciding instead to leave open positions unfilled– a choice that could slow jobs growth and potentially tip the economy into recession. |
Since layoffs can require severance payments and also generate negative buzz, hiring freezes can be less costly to a company's bottom line and reputation, experts say. Employers are also hesitant to cut jobs when workers have been hard to find in a still relatively tight labor market. |
But job vacancies can lead to burnout among the remaining staff. And tepid job growth can slow down the overall economy. |

And with the median tab for a month of assisted-living facility care amounting to $4,500 in 2021, and a month of nursing-home care costing a median $7,900, long-term care insurance may be the best option to pay for it, experts say. |
