The Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York on June 11, 2024. In Bed-Stuy, blocks lined with historic brownstone townhouses and leafy trees soaring three stories high have been home to a thriving Black community for more than a century. The neighborhood was where Black civil rights activist Malcolm X lived in the 1960s. Acclaimed rapper The Notorious B.I.G. and award-winning Black filmmaker Spike Lee also lived in Bed-Stuy in the 20th century. For about the past 15 years, a rapidly growing number of young white professionals were drawn to Bed-Stuy because the rents are more affordable than other Brooklyn neighborhoods that are closer to Manhattan. Rich families who can afford to do so also buy the historic brownstones for millions of dollars. Bed-Stuy's Black population decreased from 75% in 2000 to 41% in 2022, the most recent year for which data is available. During that same time, the white population increase from just over 2% to over 29%, data shows.
