Harris secures votes needed to become Democratic nominee

A USA TODAY count of delegates shows Kamala Harris has secured endorsements in excess of the 1,976 delegates needed to become the party's nominee in the first round of voting. The count potentially avoids a bitter internal party dispute after President Joe Biden announced he's backing out of his own White House campaign. Read more

What you don't want to hear at work: 'You're full of sh--'

The room got heated on Capitol Hill on Monday as a bipartisan set of lawmakers in the House Oversight Committee grilled Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle over her agency's failure to prevent the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Lawmakers from both parties called for Cheatle's resignation for what she acknowledged was a "colossal failure" to prevent the assassination attempt.

"You're full of s--- today": Lawmakers also voiced impatience with Cheatle's vague answers and 60-day timeline for an internal review of the planning and response to the shooting.
Missing pieces included a full and complete timeline or why there was a delay of more than a minute before removing Trump from the stage after he was shot in the ear.
Cheatle's response: The Secret Service is conducting a review of its planning and responses to the assassination attempt that is expected to be completed in 60 days.

Harris and Netanyahu will meet in Washington

U.S. Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week at the White House, an aide to Harris said on Monday. In March, Harris called for an "immediate cease-fire" in Gaza due to the "humanitarian catastrophe." At the time, it was the most pointed call to stop the fighting from a member of the Biden administration. Read more

Paris promised the most socially responsible Olympics ever. It's been moving out migrants.

France's authorities promised an inclusive and socially responsible Paris Olympics. The city's mayor, Anne Hidalgo, says the Games will be greener, cleaner and safer than any that have come before. But in what has quietly become an Olympic tradition, activists, non-profit organizations and locals say the host city has already failed to live up to its lofty ideals by forcibly relocating migrant and unhoused people out of areas where tourists will congregate in a practice they describe as "social cleansing." Photo of the day: Surf's up for the Olympics

Surfing makes its second appearance as an Olympic competition since it debuted in the Tokyo 2020 Games. French Polynesia's island of Tahiti will host the event for four days between July 27 and Aug. 5. Tahiti is about 9,700 miles away from Paris – one of the largest distances between an Olympic host city and a medal event. Here's what else you need to know about the location, judging and the surfers this year.
