Harris sets her sights on a VP

And they're off! The dash for VP pick starts now. Kamala Harris is moving swiftly to lock up the Democratic nomination for president and appeared to have enough delegate support to do so by Monday evening. Her next major task: selecting a running mate. Rather than moving to challenge Harris for the mantle, in the first 24 hours of her candidacy, the potential vice presidential picks began jockeying to be on her shortlist. For their part, Harris' campaign team has been tight-lipped about the process and who might be under serious consideration. πŸ” Here's a look at what we know.

The contenders: Harris campaign vetting at least seven Dems for VP.
President Biden to address the nation on "what lies ahead."
In presidential race, it's the ex-prosecutor vs. the convicted felon.

'Horrifying' bodycam video sparks outrage

Local officials, Illinois lawmakers and President Joe Biden have called the shooting of Sonya Massey "unthinkable, senseless" and "shocking, horrifying and heartbreaking" after video of the Black woman's deadly encounter with a white deputy was publicly released Monday afternoon.

The video: The 36-minute bodycam footage shows the rapid escalation that led Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy Sean P. Grayson to shoot Massey, 36, inside her home in Springfield, Illinois. Grayson, 30, of Riverton, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery and official misconduct. He remains in custody without bail. πŸ“ What they're saying.

Embattled Secret Service director steps down

Ten days after a lone gunman's assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump shook confidence in her ability to lead the agency charged with protecting presidents, candidates and other VIPs, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned. Yesterday, she endured withering criticism by bipartisan lawmakers at a House Oversight Committee hearing – at which she admitted the July 13 incident was the Secret Service's biggest security failure in decades.

How did we get here? Numerous committee members accused her of refusing to provide basic information about the attack and failed efforts by the Secret Service to stop the shooter before he opened fire.  πŸ‘‰ Here's everything we know.

Sen. Menendez out, too

After being convicted on 16 felony counts this month in a federal courtroom in New York, Sen. Bob Menendez intends to resign from office on Aug. 20. Menendez had been defiant since his criminal indictment was released last September, even after calls for his resignation reached a fever pitch in light of the conviction.

What were the charges? Menendez, his wife, and two businessmen were part of a bribery scheme where Menendez received, among other things, cash, gold bars and a luxury car in exchange for using his political influence. πŸ‘‰ A look at what we know so far.
