Two moderate nominees for governor could be Democrats' future

Virginia's Abigail Spanberger and New Jersey's Mikie Sherrill, moderate gubernatorial candidates on the ballot this November, are seen by some observers as a model for how Democrats can make a broad electoral appeal.

The new blue: Democrats are hoping the two moderate nominees for governor with national security backgrounds can give the party a winning formula.

A different Democrat: Spanberger and Sherrill contrast to the party's socialist nominee for New York City mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who has been a target for President Donald Trump's attacks.
The Trump of it all: Sherrill says she will fight the Trump administration in the courts to claw back any funding being withheld. Spanberger's campaign, meanwhile, appeals to Virginia's fired federal workers.
Another Democratic hope: Since the 2024 election, Hope Walz, daughter of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, has gained half a million TikTok followers, courting Gen Z women with her political takes.

What to know about Trump's moves against Venezuela

The Trump administration is poised to massively raise the stakes in its feud with the regime of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who it accuses of supporting narcotrafficking and collusion with drug cartels. Trump announced on-land strikes against Venezuela could come soon, and deployed an aircraft carrier to South America amid the tensions.

As the government shutdown continues Monday, many of the people with the power to solve the funding crisis – the consequences of which are growing more intense for millions of Americans with each passing day – were nowhere in sight in the nation's capital. President Donald Trump is on a six-day international trip just as the weekend began, after many lawmakers had already left town. Members of Congress are entrenched in disagreements over health care policy with little bipartisanship on the horizon.

In the meantime, the realities of the shutdown are worsening. Key federal health data is stalled with flu season approaching. And the government has warned of a holiday travel meltdown.

Pastors at the protest?

'We cannot be ministers in this moment and ignore what's going on. If you can't stand up now, when you're talking about the death of the democracy, the death of human beings and the denial to the least of these, then you relegate yourself and your religion, your faith, as being terribly suspect.'

~ Bishop William J. Barber, II, is among a variety of faith leaders who told USA TODAY civil action by religious voices will become even more visible in the next few weeks.
