We've made it through a busy week. Welcome to the Daily Briefing. Here's what's breaking this morning: |
Nicole Fallert here! This weekend, I'm watching "People We Meet on Vacation." We've got Friday's headlines, from two separate shootings involving federal agents, a meeting all about oil and the "Quad God" coming for the Olympics. |
A week marked by shootings involving federal agents |
Two people were injured on Thursday in a shooting involving federal agents in Portland, Oregon, authorities said, prompting local leaders and law enforcement to plead for calm after tensions were heightened after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot in the head this week by a federal immigration officer in a residential neighborhood south of Minneapolis' downtown. And Vice President JD Vance says the ongoing immigration enforcement ramp-up has only just begun. |
Here's the latest from USA TODAY: |
| • | We know the FBI agent who shot Good: The Enforcement Operations Officer is identified in court documents as Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Jonathan Ross. USA TODAY asked experts if Ross' use of force was justified. | | • | Minnesota officials can't see the case. Minnesota authorities said Thursday they were notified by the FBI that they would no longer have access to "case materials, scene evidence or investigative interviews." | | • | "Minneapolis is pissed": Local schools closed. Thousands of dollars poured in for Good's family. Anti-ICE protests continue. But neighbors on the look out for ICE say they are not deterred (Recording ICE? Know your rights). | | Ilia Malinin competes at the 2026 U.S. Figure Skating Championships on Thursday in St. Louis, Missouri. Jeff Curry, Jeff Curry-Imagn Images |
Ilia Malinin put on his usual breathtaking and mind-boggling performance in his short program Thursday night, blowing out the competition at the 2026 U.S. figure skating championships. Listen to Malinin on Milan Magic, USA TODAY's new Olympics podcast that drops its first episode Saturday. |
Miami beats Ole Miss with last-minute touchdown |
The University of Miami, who hasn't been in a National Championship since 2003, are one win away from the top spot in college football. Their 31-27 victory over Ole Miss featured a 24-yard touchdown final twist (but did Miami commit pass interference?!) on Thursday. Miami will face the winner of Indiana's matchup against Oregon in the Peach Bowl on Friday in Atlanta. And QB Carson Beck has a chance to rewrite his narrative. |
