One woman's recovery from hantavirus
At the age of 5, Shaina Montiel had felt sick for about a week. She'd been vomiting frequently and had abdominal pain. At first, her doctor told her family it was just the flu. But another doctor confirmed it was hantavirus.
Now 38, Montiel told USA TODAY it's surreal to watch the little-known virus that almost took her life three decades ago make international headlines as a deadly outbreak on a cruise ship has stoked fear around the world.
"It's so surreal, because growing up, I wanted to learn more about the hantavirus," she says. "To see people talking about it, it's just so strange. It's like I'm in another dimension or something. I just can't believe it's in headlines, because it's such a rare virus."

The truth about germs on cruises
Have a cruise booked later this year? Amid a deadly hantavirus outbreak on a cruise, you may be second guessing your booking. But here's the thing about germs on cruises: While cruise ships can provide conditions that make it easier for illnesses to spread, health experts say it's critical that these incidents be viewed in context: Norovirus outbreaks on cruises account for only a small fraction of all reported cases, and the deadly hantavirus event appears to be an unusual outlier rather than a sign of broader risks facing cruise travelers.
