In Wednesday's news:

Dr. Anthony Fauci faced a Senate committee probing the origins and response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 😷
President Donald Trump says our northern border is weak. But what's the reality? 🍁
Young people often envision how to build a family. Cancer can change that in profound ways. 🤰🏻

But first: "60 Minutes" reveals its newest correspondents and contributors after a slew of firings. ⏰

Fauci faces congressional committee 😷

A chief architect of the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic went before a Senate committee Wednesday ‒ and invoked his Fifth Amendment rights in refusing to answer any of the panel's questions. Anthony Fauci told the committee Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, has had an "obvious obsession with calling for my prosecution," as lawmakers threatened to hold Fauci in contempt and Paul accused him of lying about the virus' origins.

Among the diary's revelations: A friendship with a top official in the first Trump administration.

The view from the North 🍁

When Americans think about immigration, they usually think about the Southern border ‒ but we of course share a long border with Canada to the north as well. USA TODAY was given a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how Canadian Mounties operate, and how their approach contrasts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

"These are people who already think they are going to die. And they just want a better life. That’s the hardest part, being a police officer. You feel for these people," Cpl. Samuel Perreault-Magny said. "We have a lot of sympathy. ... Behind our uniform and badge, we are also human."

Bryan Kohberger, who pleaded guilty to killing four Idaho college students, faces an uphill battle to have his plea withdrawn, legal experts say.

Cancer changes calculus for having kids 🤰🏻

Elle Crofton was 25 when she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare bone marrow cancer usually found in men over 65. Now 38, she's finally a parent, after cancer treatment put her ability to have a child in jeopardy. As more young adults are diagnosed with cancers that once largely affected older adults, young people like Crofton are facing unexpected questions in their twenties about preserving their fertility ahead of treatment.

Six Flags debuted a new roller coaster in New Jersey, but for this third-gen Filipina, the coolest thing about it is its name: Bakunawa, a mythical sea dragon that eats the moon and shakes the Earth. 🎢 🐉
