This is America

Stories of justice and action across America

Fri Jul 31 2026

Like many Americans, Donald Trump is into sports but given how superstitious fans can be the president may want to skip his favored player or team's competitions.

Hi there, This is America readers, I'm Phillip M. Bailey, chief political correspondent with USA TODAY.

Just before the World Cup Final this past weekend, Trump complimented Lionel Messi, the Argentinian superstar, in an interview. Argentina lost to Spain, 1-0.

That has reignited questions − and jokes − about him cursing the teams he supports.

If you recall the New York Knicks ' only loss during the 2026 NBA Finals was the game Trump attended. Then there is the 2025 Ryder Cup, which the U.S. lost to Europe after he attended the first day of competition.

Comedian Seth Meyers, a regular Trump critic, reminded viewers on his NBC " Late Night" show the U.S. men's national team lost after the president spoke up on behalf of striker Folarin Balogun's red card suspension, which was later reversed.

"He's a sports reaper," Meyers said.

Mamdani: U.S. should arrest Netanyahu

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani opened up a fierce debate this week when the 34-year-old democratic socialist beseeched U.S officials to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes.

Apprehending the foreign leader was one of Mamdani's 2025 campaign promises, but he admitted in a July 21 video posted on social media that the city lacks a legal pathway  to detain the Israeli leader.

The International Criminal Court issued a warrant in November 2024 accusing Netanyahu of crimes against humanity stemming from military actions in Gaza, but the U.S. officially does not recognize its jurisdiction.

"Mamdani is threatening to arrest the head of one of our closest allies," House Republicans said in a preemptive statement posted on its X account. "He should stop politicizing local law enforcement and interfering with US foreign policy and instead focus on rising rent and housing prices and antisemitism in NYC."

Mamdani has since pivoted away from arresting Netanyahu and instead is emphasizing how New Yorker's have right to protest should he visit the United Nations − which is headquartered in the Big Apple − in September.
