Good morning! It’s Thursday, Oct. 22, and today you should know: President Donald Trump is set to rally in Iowa. New York City will vote on whether to ban horse-drawn carriages. Subtropical Storm Josephine has formed in the Atlantic. This toothpaste has been recalled. And it's Billboard Latin Music Awards day!

I’m Mallorie Sullivan, and I think this marathoner might be my new hero. Let's get into it.

🗯️ Trump shifts the conversation

The economy is hard to ignore heading into the midterms, with one recent poll finding 75% of Americans say it’s in poor shape. Trump has touted the economy as the greatest in American history , but he’s struggled to convince voters that things are getting better. With his approval ratings at a low, he’s turning to a familiar strategy.

• Most Americans say they do not earn enough to lead the life they want.
• Also: Trump offered farmers diesel aid. Why are prices not budging?

📰 More news to know right now

• Vice President JD Vance defended Vivek Ramaswamy's controversial Ohio attack ad.
• Michigan's final Senate debate was last night. Here's what you missed.
• Rep. Ilhan Omar said Trump "had everything to do" with the raid on her home.
• French President Emmanuel Macron pushed back on Trump's take on the France protests.
• Wichita police addressed rumors about the deadly youth soccer crash.

💼 Do you have a side hustle?

So do about 9 million others across the United States. Whether you're trying to keep up with rising expenses, develop new skills, or shield yourself from layoffs, more Americans are taking on second jobs and side hustles. The practice, called polyworking, can provide additional income and career flexibility, but it raises questions about burnout, job security, and workplace expectations.

• Feeling burned out? Here's how you can recover.
• If you're looking for a side hustle, these pay the most.

💭 Things I can't stop thinking about

• 💍 Two former "GMA" cohosts got married — and now their exes are engaged.
• 👀 The bubbling drama between these "Monday Night Football" announcers.
• 🐱 The top pet names of 2026, particularly the fastest-rising cat name.
• 🔥 Alexander Skarsgård.
