Faced with the president's cratering approval rating, an electorate restive over the high cost of living and the war with Iran, and perceptions the president isn't focused on Americans' concerns, GOP candidates are wary of Trump making the midterms a referendum on his administration.

That's what Shawn Carnes, a recently laid-off publicist, said about the side hustles Carnes and millions of other Americans rely on to make ends meet as the cost of... well, everything continues to rise. So what is it like working full-time, then taking on second and even third jobs to keep the bills paid or to save money toward a long-term goal, or just to have some dough left over for some fun after all the work is done?

Despite living in the Garden State for 52 of my 55 years and frequently venturing into the Pine Barrens, I have not encountered the Jersey Devil. Yet.

For more than 290 years ‒ longer than we've been a country ‒ the hoofed, horse-headed, winged cryptid has haunted the imaginations of New Jerseyans (if not actually haunted New Jersey). And it's not the only legendary creature believed to wander around in America's forests, from the Pacific Northwest to the Appalachian Trail. I talked with folklorists about how these these creatures we're (pretty sure) don't exist originated and why they still fascinate us.

Dictionary.com has named its 2026 Word of the Year and it'll be familiar to the denizens of the Gen Z and Gen Alpha corners of the internet. Maxxing, short for "maximizing," was searched 19 times more frequently than a year ago, the site's analysis found. Among the other contenders: "Affordability," "data center," "odyssey" and "unc."
