The shadowy business of protecting Trump's reputation

Long day? Short list. Here's the news you need to know.

The shadowy business of protecting Trump's reputation
The "National Enquirer" endorsed Trump's campaign.

Hush now

Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal: $150,000. Adult film star Stormy Daniels: $130,000. Former Trump World Tower doorman Dino Sajudin: $30,000. Secret hush payments involving Donald Trump are apparently all the rage. Multiple media outlets reported Thursday that Sajudin, whose story parallels McDougal's and Daniels', was paid in 2015 to stay silent about salacious information he had on Trump. Sajudin's story claimed Trump had fathered a love-child almost three decades ago. Both Sajudin and McDougal, who alleges she had an affair with Trump, were paid by American Media, the parent company of the National Enquirer. Daniels, who also alleges an affair, was paid by Michael Cohen, Trump's personal attorney.

Just when you thought warm weather was here …

A powerhouse storm is about to unleash heavy snow, tornadoes, fires and wild temperature swings across most of the nation starting Friday. The northern Plains and Upper Midwest will see blizzard conditions with some areas getting up to 20 inches of snow. So much for spring . The heaviest snow is forecast across northern Nebraska, much of South Dakota and western Minnesota.

Hate morning people? A new study says you should seriously consider becoming one.

That is, if you don't want to die. A new study found people who prefer to stay up later have a higher mortality rate than people who go to sleep early. Researchers found "night owls" had a 10% greater risk of dying than morning people and had higher risks for conditions such as diabetes or psychological disorders. Now researchers want to learn whether night owls can convert to morning people. Good luck.

Police officers and firefighters are dying — but not from what you think

Suicides left more officers and firefighters dead last year than all line-of-duty deaths combined — a jarring statistic that continues to plague first responders, though few talk about it. And not much is being done to stop the deaths. Last year, 103 firefighters and 140 police officers committed suicide, whereas 93 firefighters and 129 officers died in the line of duty, according to a study by the Ruderman Family Foundation, a philanthropic organization that works for the rights of people with disabilities. Another group that needs suicide prevention help: Teenagers.

Pompeo for secretary of State

Mike Pompeo, up for the position of secretary of State, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday. Here's what he said on some of the key challenges facing our country:

Russia: The U.S. needs to "push back" against Vladimir Putin, including in the economic and cyber arenas.
North Korea: Don't expect a deal, but do expect a "diplomatic outcome" at the proposed summit in May with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Iran nuclear deal: He's advocating for a tougher accord.

Khloé's a mom

Khloé Kardashian gave birth to her first child, a baby girl, on Thursday, according to media reports. Dad is Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player Tristan Thompson. It isn't all happy news, though. The birth arrived at the same time a cloud descended over Kardashian's relationship with Thompson, who has been accused of cheating on her, sparking a massive social media backlash  (and boos at his Cavs game.)
