Trump promises 'free speech' executive order at CPAC |
In a more than two-hour speech filled with boastful claims, insults and an expletive, President Donald Trump addressed adoring conservatives Saturday at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland. Fresh off a rough week thanks to Michael Cohen's stinging testimony before Congress and a North Korea summit that failed to produce a deal, Trump tackled numerous subjects in the speech. Most notably, he announced he will sign "very soon" an executive order requiring schools to "support free speech" if they want federal research dollars. He also attacked Democrats and the Green New Deal. Trump also used a mock southern accent to deride ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. |
It's a first: SpaceX's Dragon docks at the International Space Station |
A SpaceX capsule that could be astronauts' next ride to orbit from the United States safely reached the International Space Station early Sunday , completing a flawless daylong voyage from Kennedy Space Center on its first test flight. The Crew Dragon eased into a docking port at 5:51 a.m., becoming the first privately designed and operated spacecraft capable of flying to people to visit the outpost. The station had not hosted a U.S. crew ship for nearly eight years, since Atlantis on NASA's final space shuttle mission in July 2011. Since then, only Russia's Soyuz has flown astronauts up and down. |
Rand Paul: I'll vote to block Trump's emergency declaration |
U.S. Sen. Rand Paul has indicated he'll vote in favor of a resolution seeking to block President Donald Trump's southern border national emergency declaration, giving Senate opponents enough votes to send the resolution to the president's desk. During a speech Saturday night in Bowling Green, Paul, R-Ky., said he "can't vote to give extra-Constitutional powers to the president," according to the Bowling Green Daily News. Assuming all the Senate's 47 Democrats and their independent allies vote against Trump, opponents would have the votes needed. Trump is expected to veto the resolution. |

Officers who fatally shot Stephon Clark won't face charges |
Prosecutors on Saturday said they would not charge two Sacramento police officers in the March 2018 fatal shooting of a 22-year-old unarmed black man who was in his grandmother's backyard. In a lengthy presentation, Sacramento District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said video evidence showed Stephon Clark was advancing on the two officers, Terrance Mercadal and Jared Robinet, and was in a shooting posture when they opened fire. Clark's mother, SeQuette Clark, spoke Saturday at the home near where her son was killed, the Associated Press reported. "This is just the beginning," she said. "The fight for justice has just begun." |
March madness: Heavy snow, bitter cold sweeps nation |
A wave of harsh winter weather was rolling across the nation Sunday, driving heavy snow from California's Sierra Nevada to New England and triggering bone-chilling temperatures that could loiter deep into the week . The latest in a series of recent, massive storms conspired with a fresh push of Arctic air to bring little relief as the calendar flipped to March, AccuWeather said. By Monday night, parts of Pennsylvania and New England could see a foot of snow. The Southeast won't be spared. Heavy rainfall, severe storms with the threat of wind damage, an isolated tornado and flash flooding are possible. |
Sanders kicks off 2020 campaign in Brooklyn |
Bernie Sanders officially launched his 2020 presidential campaign Saturday near the Brooklyn, N.Y., neighborhood where he grew up. The Vermont senator, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats, is using the same logo from his 2016 run and referred to the same core message Saturday , calling for universal health care, free tuition at public universities and a $15 hourly minimum wage. He also slammed President Donald Trump as the "most dangerous president in modern American history." Sanders also tried to add a personal narrative to his liberal economic platform by opening up about his past, noting he grew up in "a lower-middle-class family" in a rent-controlled apartment. |
