The figure skating community comes together in Boston to compete – and to mourn. The Trump administration goes on defense after war plans leak. Are the rumors about Chipotle true? |
👋 Happy Wednesday! Rebecca Morin here. Let's get to today's news. |
But first: Hopefully, there were no late fees. 📚 A once-popular book was just returned to an Ohio public library – only 98 years late. |
World championships underway as figure skating heals from DC crash | When you fall, you get back up. It's a lesson that Janet Champion, a former Ice Follies child skater and longtime figure skating coach, remembers being taught by her coach. The same coach who died in a plane crash in 1961 that killed the entire U.S. Figure Skating Team who were on the way to that year's world championships. It's an eerie parallel now two months after American Eagle Flight 5342 collided with a military helicopter in Washington, D.C., killing 64 people aboard, including 28 members of the figure skating community. Now, with the 2025 World Figure Skating Championships underway, the twin disasters weigh heavy with members of the community. ⛸️ How the community is learning from the tragedies. | Mariia Seniuk competes in the women's short program during the ISU World Figure Skating Championships at TD Garden in Boston on Wednesday. Trump administration on defense in 'Signalgate' leak | The Atlantic magazine published the full text chain from the Signal chat – including screenshots – from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other top Trump officials detailing operations to carry out airstrikes on Houthi sites in Yemen. After Trump officials insisted no classified material was shared in the text chat, which included The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, the publication decided to disclose the messages to let people "reach their own conclusions." 👉 See what the messages said. |
Trump team on defense: National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, both of whom were in the chat, maintained that no classified material was discussed during a hearing with the House Intelligence Committee. Hegseth also adamantly pushed back that the information he texted was classified, telling reporters that "nobody's texting war plans." 👉 What the Trump administration has said. | Tulsi Gabbard, director of National Intelligence, left, listens as CIA Director John Ratcliffe answers questions at a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Wednesday in Washington, DC. The Baltimore bridge collapse, one year later | In the wee hours of March 26, 2024, a container vessel the size of a Manhattan skyscraper rammed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. The maritime crash killed six construction workers and temporarily shuttered one of the nation's busiest ports. A year later, the reality of the disaster still weighs on the city of Baltimore – and among many of the residents in the nearby working class neighborhoods. Daily traffic delays. Businesses are isolated, with revenue declining. Still, the state is moving forward to construct a taller bridge that will feature state-of-the-art pier protection. 👉 How the bridge collapse affected Baltimore. | The remains of the Francis Scott Key Bridge are visible on March 20, after nearly a year of cleanup. Wait, is Chipotle closing? | Don't panic, your queso isn't going anywhere. Chipotle has refuted rumors that the Mexican fast-casual restaurant chain was closing. Social media users began speculating last week that the restaurant was going to be filing for bankruptcy and closing restaurants in 2025 after a Spanish media outlet published a report about the closure of Farmesa Fresh Eatery, a spinoff venture of Chipotle. The outlet used a promotional image of Chipotle for the article. Chipotle spokesperson Erin Wolford said in a statement that the "false information stemmed from an inaccurate online article confusing Chipotle with a venture it tested in 2023." 🌯 How the restaurant is actually expanding. | A Chipotle restaurant in SoHo in New York City, pictured in 2024.
