The Daily Money: Pickups go compact?!

In today's Daily Money newsletter, we have insights on Tesla, cryptocurrencies, tax refunds, Social Security and Pepsi Blue. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

The Daily Money

Friday, April 23

Good morning, Daily Money crew, it's Nathan Bomey celebrating Friday!

Elon Musk has had quite the topsy-turvy week.

On the Tesla front, he's been dealing with reports about a deadly crash in Texas that have placed the company's Autopilot system under the microscope. On the SpaceX front, he's celebrating this morning's successful launch of a crew on a mission to the International Space Station.

Below we've got news on compact pickups, cryptocurrencies, Honda electric vehicles, tax returns and berry-flavored soda.

On to our ...

💡 INSIGHT OF THE DAY: Self-driving cars will need to be anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 times safer than human drivers to gain acceptance from regulators and consumers, Morgan Stanley auto analyst Adam Jonas predicts. His prediction came after the Tesla crash on Saturday prompted safety advocates to say that people have too much faith in the current capability of self-driving car technology.

📰 Here are our top stories:

1. Why do pickups have to be so big, you say? They don't. The compact pickup is poised to make a comeback. Check out my story on how the recently revealed Hyundai Santa Cruz is generating buzz, and the likely-to-debut-soon Ford Maverick could accelerate the trend.

2. Cryptocurrencies fell sharply this morning after word of President Biden's proposed capital gains tax increase settled in. Jessica Menton has all the details

3. Is Tesla's Autopilot to blame for Saturday's deadly crash? We don't know yet. But Consumer Reports demonstrated that Autopilot can be used with no one in the driver's seat, a move safety advocates say is dangerous.

4. Why is it taking so long to get tax refunds this year? Some are taking the IRS six to eight weeks.

5. Don't fall for misinformation about Social Security. Here are three stats that could spell trouble for retirees.

6. Goodbye, gas. Honda is joining the parade of automakers aiming to phase out gas cars and move to exclusively electric vehicles.

7. I don't remember Pepsi Blue, but apparently it's making a comeback

I'm going to pass on the berry-flavored soda, but this is a judgment-free zone here at Daily Money, so feel free to indulge.
