The Daily Money

Thursday, April 1

Good morning, Daily Money friends, it's Nathan Bomey on this first day of April. Be on the lookout for April Fools' Day jokes, friends. And remember what my dad always told me: The first rule of joking is ... make sure it's funny.

💰 Hey, Daily Money is our regular USA TODAY roundup of all things personal finance, business and tech. If you're not yet subscribed, it's free, so sign up here!

💡 INSIGHT OF THE DAY: If you're one of the 40 million Americans who received unemployment insurance in 2020, you won't have to pay taxes on those benefits as long as you make less than $150,000. And if you've already filed your tax return without claiming that tax break, the IRS is poised to send you a refund check. Jessica Menton has all the details here.

📰 Here are our top stories:

1. President Biden's proposed infrastructure stimulus plan could boost the economy in 2022 and beyond. But would higher taxes hurt the recovery before projects can get started?

2. First came the toilet paper shortages. Now come the price increases. The maker of the Cottonelle and Scott brands is increasing prices after commodity costs spiked.

3. Retirement savers in their 40s have this median balance. How do you compare?

4. How much will you pay in taxes over the course of your lifetime? Maybe it's better not to look, but if you have to, here's the answer.

5. When is misleading marketing acceptable? Brand experts say Volkswagen messed up by lying to reporters about its faux "Voltswagen" rebranding strategy.

6. It's National Burrito Day! Check out all the deals rounded up by Kelly Tyko.

I, for one, could use a free burrito after covering that infernal "Voltswagen" story all week.
