Welcome to Week 2 of the Tokyo Olympics! The Games are flying by, but if you missed last night's action, we've got you covered with an early-morning update. |
Caeleb Dressel already had his name in the history books before the Tokyo Olympics, but he cemented his legacy last night when he won his fifth gold medal of the Games and joined an exclusive club of swimmers who have accomplished the same feat: |
Michael Phelps. Mark Spitz. Kristin Otto. Matt Biondi. And now, Dressel. |
Dressel entered the final night of the Olympic swimming competition with three gold medals and a world record already under his belt. He then added a fourth gold in the 50-meter freestyle, finishing in 21.07 to set a new Olympic record. |
He brought home a fifth gold in the final event of the meet and yet another world record in the 4x100-meter medley relay. Dressel, who was joined by Ryan Murphy, Michael Andrew and Zach Apple, swam the butterfly leg of the race. |
The group smashed the 12-year-old world record, besting the previous time by more than half a second — that doesn't sound like a lot, but trust me, it is. |

On top of Dressel's dominant day, American Bobby Finke won his second gold medal of the Games in the 1,500-meter freestyle. |
Finke's win completed the American sweep of all of the long distance swimming events at the Tokyo Olympics, as he also won the men's 800 freestyle, and Katie Ledecky won both races on the women's side. |
The U.S. women also had a strong showing in the 4x100 medley relay, finishing second to Australia in an extremely competitive race. |
