Good morning, Daily Money readers. This is Jayme Deerwester back with you after a week's respite, ready to take you through the remaining days of 2021. |
So here's a little good news about the highly-contagious omicron variant of COVID, which went from making up just 13% of all cases to 73% in just one week: it often results in milder cases or positive tests without symptoms. |
The bad news: it may force many restaurant, store, hotel and other workers to quarantine if they test positive under a federal mandate, set to take effect on Feb. 9. Such worker absences could become widespread, particularly at workplaces where employees can't work remotely. Nevertheless, it must first survive a Supreme Court test, which is set for Jan. 7. |

INSIGHT OF THE DAY. Facebook's deliberations of how to handle misinformation spreading through reshares inevitably circle back to one concern in the documents leaked by whistleblower Frances Haugen: They generate likes, comments and shares – exactly the kind of engagement the company wants. |
"It clearly says that they put their business interests over having a civilized platform," said Matthias Spielkamp, executive director of Algorithm Watch, a research and advocacy organization. "It's hard to come up with a different explanation than to say, 'We know it's gross what people are sharing and we know how we could slow it down, but we are not doing it.' " |
