400,000 without power in Midwest as winds hit 95 mph |
Powerful winds battered parts of the Midwest on Thursday after severe weather killed at least one person in Iowa and left nearly 350,000 people without power in Michigan and Wisconsin alone. Parts of Michigan remained under a high wind warning as of midday Thursday, but the storms were forecast to shift north of the Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service. The winds caused clusters of tornadoes Wednesday and downed trees and power lines across the region. The winds also caused a semitruck in Iowa to roll onto its side, killing the driver, state patrol officers said. |
• | From Colorado to Michigan, more than 400,000 customers were without power Thursday morning, according to the online tracker Poweroutage.us. | • | In Nebraska and Iowa, at least 20 tornadoes were reported, according to the Storm Prediction Center. | • | In Des Moines, the wind gusts reached up to 74 mph, which hadn't been seen in the city since the 1970s, the local Weather Service office tweeted. | |

The Jaguars are breaking up with Urban Meyer |
Before he could even complete his first season in the NFL, Urban Meyer has been fired by the Jacksonville Jaguars, bringing an end to a brief but tumultuous reign. Remember when he allegedly kicked a kicker? That was bad. Not to mention the viral video of him at an Ohio bar. Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Meyer's hiring was met with skepticism from the beginning. It was his first NFL head coaching job after a tenure as one of the most successful college coaches in history, posting a 187-32 overall record and winning three national championships. The Jaguars have had two winning seasons in the past 15 years, and they have lost 10 games or more for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. |

CDC panel recommends Pfizer, Moderna COVID vaccines over Johnson & Johson |
A CDC panel voted Thursday to recommend the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for adults over the Johnson & Johnson vaccine due to a small number of rare but dangerous blood clots. Out of approximately 17 million people in the United States who have gotten the J&J vaccine, there have been nine deaths from the condition called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices said. Getting the J&J vaccine was still much safer than any risk of the rare side effect because getting COVID-19 is much more likely to cause severe disease or death, ACIP members said. |

To protect and serve their own |
Jo'Anna Bird was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 2009. He'd told her he would do it – in letters, phone calls and when he abused her. Bird had called the police for help multiple times, but they had failed to stop him. Her boyfriend was eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison, but a key question about her murder has persisted: Why had police failed to protect her? For more than a decade, officers in Long Island's Nassau County Police Department were allowed to keep secret how they repeatedly failed to protect Bird. They locked away the full story in an internal affairs investigation that has never been released to the public – until now. |
