Biden to sign Inflation Reduction Act |
President Joe Biden is preparing to sign Democrats' landmark climate change and health care bill. It's the "final piece" of the president's pared-down domestic agenda as he aims to boost his party's standing with voters ahead of midterm elections. The legislation includes the biggest federal investment ever to fight climate change — some $375 billion over a decade. It also caps prescription drug costs at $2,000 out-of-pocket annually for Medicare recipients, and helps an estimated 13 million Americans pay for health care insurance by extending subsidies provided during the coronavirus pandemic. The measure is paid for in part by new taxes on large companies. Read more |

Colorado River cuts expected for Arizona, Nevada and Mexico |
Federal officials on Tuesday are expected to announce water cuts that would further reduce how much Colorado River water some users in the seven U.S. states reliant on the river and Mexico receive. Cities, farms and water managers in Arizona, Nevada and Mexico are widely anticipating Tuesday's reductions. They are based on a plan states signed in 2019 to help keep more water in one of the river's key storage reservoirs. But the cuts come as Western states grapple with another, larger looming deadline about how to share the dwindling water source as it yields less and less to go around. Read more |

Feds oppose unsealing affidavit for Mar-a-Lago warrant |
The Justice Department on Monday opposed releasing an affidavit in support of the warrant to search former President Donald Trump's home, saying its release could hurt the investigation and future probes. News organizations had filed a motion to make the affidavit public, which would shed new light on the department's investigation into Trump's alleged removal of classified documents from the White House at the end of his term. • | ''Miscellaneous secret documents'': Despite revealing that 11 sets of documents were seized from Mar-a-Lago, the content of these documents remains sealed. | • | Catch me up: What makes information ''classified''? Who has the power to declassify it? | • | What is Trump under investigation for? The warrant showed the former president is under investigation for possibly breaking three federal laws: removal or destruction of records, obstructing an investigation, and violating the Espionage Act. | |

Jury selection underway as R. Kelly faces federal trial |
Jury selection is underway at R. Kelly's federal trial in his hometown of Chicago. Kelly is facing 13 charges, filed in 2019, including producing child pornography, enticing a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity, and conspiracy to obstruct justice. One of the charges contends Kelly rigged his 2008 state child pornography trial by threatening and paying off a girl whom he allegedly filmed himself abusing when he was around 30 and she was no older than 14. Jurors acquitted Kelly on all charges in that 2008 trial. Kelly, 55, already has been sentenced by a New York federal judge to a 30-year prison term. Read more |
