Storms continue to batter California |
Thousands of Californians fled their homes, and the death toll from the wave of devastating storms rose to at least 14 as the latest "atmospheric river" slammed a wide swath of the state with gale-force winds and more than a foot of rain. "The endless onslaught of potent systems with atmospheric rivers of moisture continue to inundate California," the National Weather Service said in a statement. In the town of Montecito, about 10,000 residents were ordered to evacuate. The weather service also issued a flood watch for the entire San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento Valley and Monterey Bay. Areas hit by wildfires in recent years faced the possibility of mud and debris sliding off hillsides that have yet to fully recover their protective layer of vegetation. More bad weather was on the way Wednesday, forecasters warned. Follow the latest updates on the storms in California. |

DOJ reviewing Biden classified documents |
The Justice Department is reviewing classified documents recovered last fall in a storage closet connected to an office used by Biden prior to his presidential campaign. A special counsel to Biden said the documents were turned over in a timely manner and Biden's personal lawyers have been cooperating with the archives and the DOJ. The administration hasn't described the number or type of documents, but the White House said it was a "small number" and that they "were not the subject of any previous request or inquiry by the archives." What we know about the documents. |

Former Trump Organization CFO receives 5-month sentence |
Allen Weisselberg, the former top Trump family financial lieutenant whose testimony helped prosecutors win criminal tax fraud convictions of two Trump companies, was sentenced to five months in jail Tuesday under a plea agreement with prosecutors. The deal spared Weisselberg from the maximum 15-year prison term he would have faced absent his plea deal – and if he had joined the Trump firms in pursuing a defense at trial that a jury rejected in December. The Trump Corp. and the Trump Payroll Corp. collectively were found guilty of 17 criminal charges and face as much as $1.6 million in criminal penalties. Ukrainians coming to US for training on Patriot missiles |
About 100 Ukrainians are coming to Oklahoma's Fort Sill to begin training on the Patriot missile defense system. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy lobbied for months for the system, saying it would make a significant difference in bolstering Kyiv's defenses. The U.S. pledged one Patriot battery in December as part of one of several large military assistance packages it has provided Ukraine in recent weeks. Last week Germany pledged an additional Patriot battery. The truck-mounted launching systems can hold up to four missile interceptors each, a ground radar, a control station and a generator. The Golden Globes return to TV |
The scandal-ridden awards show, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, returns Tuesday to NBC and Peacock a year after the network dropped the broadcast amid criticism over the HFPA's lack of diversity. The backlash included some actors vowing to boycott the organization until it diversified its ranks. The HFPA then promised to improve its representation and announced it was adding 21 new members. Of them, six were Black, six Latino, five Asian and four Middle Eastern/North African. This year, tragicomedy "The Banshees of Inisherin" leads all films with eight nominations, followed by action thriller "Everything Everywhere All At Once" with six. Read more about the awards show. |
