Residents of an Ohio town face uncertainty over a train derailment that released hazardous chemicals. The murder of a revered football coach shocks an Indianapolis neighborhood – and the USA TODAY writer who knew him well. And it's Black History Month, a time to celebrate African Americans' contributions to the nation. |
Good morning, and welcome to The Short List weekend edition.✨ I'm John Riley, here again with some great stories to start your weekend.✔️ |
π How safe are trains?: On Feb. 3, a train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio. Officials decided to complete a controlled release of vinyl chloride to prevent an explosion. The burn caused toxic fumes to be released into the area, which alarmed residents and caused concerns about possible long-term effects. The accident also prompted a slew of false and misleading claims on social media. Here's a look at what's true and what's false, from USA TODAY's fact check team. |
As railroad operators have faced more competition with long-haul truckers, the major companies have worked to decrease costs, including by cutting the workforce. And Norfolk Southern, the company behind the Ohio chemical spill, fought against a new federal safety rule that could have helped limit the impact of this month's derailment. |

π΅ The cost of gun violence: Richard Donnell Hamilton was the coach of the Indy Steelers youth football team. But he was much more, writes USA TODAY's Suzette Hackney , who formerly had worked in Indianapolis and knew Hamilton well. "Coach Nell was not just these boys' coach. He was their guide and their champion. He loved on them and challenged them to become better men. He worked to keep them safe from gun violence." On Jan. 11, he was shot and killed in a road rage incident. |
When Hackney got the news, she returned to Indiana to search for answers and to chronicle the loss of a local hero. "How will they live without this man, their teacher, mentor, confidant, big brother, uncle, father and friend?" |
π΅ Black History Month: USA TODAY is marking the month with a series of articles on the African-American experience and the continued struggle for racial justice. |
