Tight presidential vote in Turkey heads to runoff

A runoff between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his main rival, opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu, will take place in two weeks after a tight election race in Turkey, the country's electoral chief said Monday. The result will determine if the NATO ally remains under the control of Erdogan, who has ruled Turkey for 20 years with an increasingly authoritarian grip, or resumes the more democratic path promised by Kilicdaroglu.

Why Turkey's election resonates far beyond its borders.
