Parents fight back after chemical paint stripper kills their kids

A bathtub. A floor. A bike. The items Kevin Hartley, Drew Wynne and Joshua Atkins had been working on at the time of their deaths less than 10 months apart varied, but what cut their lives short was the same: a chemical in paint strippers and other products sold in stores nationwide. In their grief and horror, their families vowed to fight like heck to keep methylene chloride from killing again. Get it off the shelves. Ban it. But in the U.S., with its checkered history of weak worker and consumer protections, astonishingly few chemicals have ever met that fate. Here's how the families beat the odds.

'Time is running out'

"Time is running out" to avert an economic crisis, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned, as President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy resumed talks Tuesday on raising the debt ceiling. Expectations for the high-stakes White House meeting, which started shortly after 3 p.m. EDT, are modest but higher than last week's gathering that failed to produce a breakthrough. McCarthy has been less optimistic than the White House about finalizing a deal, which the speaker said needs to happen by the end of the week for approval in Congress before June 1. Here's what to know.

Police search for motive in New Mexico shooting that killed 3

Just over 24 hours after a shooting rampage that left three people dead and six injured, police have identified the gunman as an 18-year-old man who "was ultimately shot and killed by responding officers" on Monday, according to Steve Hebbe, police chief in Farmington, New Mexico. Investigators are still searching for a motive, including by talking to the family of the suspect, who is accused of using at least three firearms to shoot randomly at cars and houses, Hebbe said. He said the gunman shot at least six homes and three vehicles with three weapons, including an "AR-style rifle." Here's what we know.

Record heat in West; severe weather elsewhere

What's going on with the weather? A little bit of everything. In the western United States this week, heat will remain a factor, and record-high minimum temperatures are possible throughout the Pacific Northwest. Elsewhere, a nasty storm system brings the possibility of severe weather and flooding from portions of the Appalachians to the mid-Atlantic states on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. And professional golf fans would probably be wise to pack a parka this week if you're heading out to the PGA Championship in upstate New York: High temperatures in the practice rounds may only get into the 50s. Brrr! Here's a look at the forecast.
