Hunter Biden was convicted of three felony charges related to a gun purchase. A federal judge struck down Florida's ban on transgender care for children. And why are students missing so much school?

Hunter Biden found guilty on all charges

A federal jury convicted Hunter Biden of federal gun charges, a historic first for the offspring of a sitting president, after a trial featuring wrenching emotional testimony about his drug use from his ex-wife and sister-in-law.

How we got here: Hunter Biden's case came after a plea deal fell apart last year that could have resolved gun and tax charges without prison time. He still faces a federal trial in California starting Sept. 5 for allegedly avoiding taxes.

What's next? President Joe Biden's son faces up to 25 years in prison for three charges − lying on a federal screening form about his drug use, lying to a gun dealer and possessing the gun − although first-time, nonviolent offenders typically get shorter sentences. 👉 Check out our recap.

Soldiers more likely to die by suicide than in combat

It's a grim revelation. United States soldiers were almost nine times more likely to die by suicide than by enemy fire, according to a Pentagon study for the five-year period ending in 2019.

What to know: The study found that suicide was the leading cause of death among active-duty soldiers from 2014 to 2019. There were 883 suicide deaths during that time period. Accidents were the No. 2 cause with 814 deaths. There were 96 combat deaths. Suicide, meanwhile, has increased among active-duty soldiers and generally has been climbing since 2019. So far in 2024, 55 soldiers have died by suicide. 🔎 See the data breakdown.

Why are kids missing so much school?

The attendance records are in shambles. Millions of students have missed weeks of school over the past few years. This chronic absenteeism – when students miss at least 10% of the school year – has become an epidemic in America's schools. And while teachers and advocates hoped it would get better after the pandemic, in many cases it's actually gotten a lot worse.

Are the kids all right? Some students say they're bored. Others are struggling with their mental health. The causes for missing so much school are complex and multidimensional. ✏️ See five key explanations.

An unconstitutional ban

Blocked. A federal judge on Tuesday ruled that Florida's ban on health care for transgender children and restrictions for transgender adults is unconstitutional. U.S. District Court Judge Robert Hinkle's ruling comes as a blow to Gov. Ron DeSantis' agenda, which has included legislation saying gender-affirming care is experimental and lacks evidence. The plaintiffs, four transgender adults and seven parents of transgender minors, prevailed against Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, the Florida Board of Medicine, the Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine and other state leaders. 👉 What to know about the ruling.
