Donald Trump, Republican

Donald Trump was born in 1946 in Queens, New York. He earned his undergraduate degree at the New York Military Academy and later attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Trump, 78, is the owner of the Trump Organization, a company he took over from his father in 1971, and was the host of the reality TV show, "The Apprentice."

Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election to become the 45th president of the United States. The work of the Trump administration included reforming the U.S. tax code, nominating three Supreme Court justices, and responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump is the only former president in American history to be impeached twice by Congress and the only former president to be indicted on criminal charges. He lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.

In the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump has proposed across-the-board tariffs on imported goods and favors extending the tax cuts he passed during his presidency. Immigration is a core issue of his campaign, promising a crackdown on migrants. Trump has called for a "fast" end to the conflicts in Israel and Ukraine, though the former president's critics have often taken aim at his relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. He takes credit for overturning Roe v. Wade and says abortion rights should be left to the states.

Trump's pick for Vice President is J.D. Vance

J.D. Vance was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2022. The Middletown, Ohio, native captured national attention in 2016 with his memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which detailed a childhood plagued by poverty and addiction. Vance, 40, joined the Marine Corps after high school and went on to earn degrees at Ohio State University and Yale Law School. Before running for Senate, Vance worked as a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley.

Kamala Harris, Democrat

Kamala Harris was born in 1964 in Oakland, California, to immigrant parents from Jamaica and India. She earned her undergraduate degree at Howard University in D.C. and returned to California for law school.

Harris, 59, joined the Alameda County district attorney's office after graduating in 1989 and went on to serve as district attorney of nearby San Francisco. In 2010, she won in a tight race to become California's attorney general and in 2017 became a U.S. senator, grabbing attention for her prosecutorial questioning during high-profile congressional hearings.

After an unsuccessful 2020 presidential bid, Harris joined President Joe Biden's campaign as running mate and became the first woman vice president.

Her 2024 presidential campaign kicked off when Biden dropped out of the race July 21. She proposes raising taxes for corporations, tax breaks for small businesses and places reproductive rights at the fore of her campaign. She supports Ukraine in its war against Russia and Israel's ability to defend itself, but also calls for a cease-fire with Hamas. Harris supports pathways to citizenship for immigrants.

Harris is the first Black woman and the first Asian American nominee of a major party and is the highest-ranking woman in U.S. political history.

Harris' running mate is Tim Walz

Tim Walz is serving his second term as the governor of Minnesota. Born in Nebraska, Walz spent his career pre-politics as a high school geography teacher and football coach in Mankato, Minn. Walz, 60, served in the Army National Guard for 24 years before running for the House of Representatives in 2006. There, he served six terms before being elected as Minnesota's top politician. Walz was a largely unknown figure on the national stage up until being picked by Harris as her running mate. He has since gone viral for his Midwestern, relatable personality as well as his progressive policy history, including creating universal meals for schools and protecting reproductive care in Minnesota.
