Magnitude 8.8 earthquake off Russia triggers tsunami alert for US West Coast

A tsunami watch was issued for the entire west coast of the U.S. and Canada after an 8.7 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia on July 29. Tsunami activity could occur along the coast as late as 1:15 a.m. local time in La Jolla, California, according to the National Weather Service.

The earthquake was recorded at about 78 miles east-southeast of of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
