Trump's tariff deadline is quickly approaching

Deal or no deal? Or maybe, TACO or tariffs? President Donald Trump's Friday tariff deadline is fast approaching, and countries whose exports are facing stiff fees are scrambling to ink trade deals that preserve as much access as possible to American markets. The European Union and its 27-nation bloc became the latest of the United States' top trading partners to come to an agreement with Trump over the weekend. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said this week that his country was in the "intense phase" of the complex negotiations.

Which countries' goods could see a tariff increase? A baseline tariff of 10% is currently in place for products from most countries, but some two dozen nations received letters from Trump saying that higher rates are on the way. They include Brazil, which Trump says he'll hit with a 50% tariff, and India, which he said he'll apply a 26% rate to, as well as Canada, at 35%, and Mexico, which faces a 30% tariff. What to know about the trade talks.

EU trade deal to spur higher prices: Trump's tariffs, including the new rate for EU imports, would raise prices by 1.8% in the short run, the equivalent of an average household income loss of roughly $2,400. Some furniture, pharmaceuticals and imported designer handbags and apparel could see a price increase. See which items could be affected.

Trump briefed in Manhattan shooting

President Donald Trump on Tuesday called the gunman in a shooting in Midtown Manhattan a "crazed lunatic" and was briefed on the incident while on a trip to Scotland. At least four people were killed, including a New York City police officer, in the shooting. Police say they are investigating the alleged gunman's motives. The 27-year-old Nevada man is accused of fatally shooting at least four people before killing himself. Trump also called the shooting "tragic."

Your e-books could be on the line

Like many cinephiles (or just AMC A-Listers), I'm very excited for Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" coming out next year. So much so that I borrowed an e-book of the epic poem from my local library. It's one of several e-books I've borrowed, like many Americans. But Congress is currently considering a budget bill that may be cutting back on funding for local libraries. The proposed budget would cut federal funding for libraries and museums from nearly $300 million to $5.5 million. While every state and local library will be affected differently by the loss of funds, it could lead to layoffs, ending tutoring programs, stopping internet service for rural libraries, and of course, stopping e-book access. How libraries use federal funds in their communities.
