Democratic state lawmakers have fled Texas in protest. College football's preseason Top 25 has been unveiled. And Sydney Sweeney isn't letting controversy keep her from stepping out. |
👋 Hello! Rebecca Morin here. I got to soak up some rays on the beach this past weekend. Now it's time to soak up Monday's news! | You know what they say: Don't mess with Texas. More than 50 Democratic state lawmakers left the state to deny Republicans the quorum on Monday needed to begin redrawing the state's 38 congressional districts. The redistricting effort is a move by Republicans to protect the party's narrow House majority in next year's midterm elections, which President Donald Trump has backed and said could yield as many as five additional GOP seats. A large group of Democratic state lawmakers flew to Illinois on Sunday, while smaller groups went to Boston and Albany, New York. 👉 What to know about the redistricting plan. |
A governor's threat: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, threatened the Democrats who left the state with legal action and removal from the legislature. The absent Democrats are already facing consequences in the form of a $500 per day fine for being out of state. 👉 Read Abbott's memo on his actions against Democrats. | From left, Illinois Gov. Tom Krawczyk/Reuters | The college football season will start with a bang this year. For the first time, Texas will start its campaign at No. 1 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which unveiled its preseason rankings on Monday. But the Longhorns will face a huge test in Week 1, when they play defending champion and preseason No. 2 Ohio State. The No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the season opener is unprecedented in the history of the coaches poll, and the hype leading up to the clash will be as well. 🏈 See the full preseason Top 25. | The Texas Longhorns, with Arch Manning (16) taking over as starting quarterback, will begin the season at No. 1 in the college football US LBM Coaches Poll. After drawing backlash over her controversial American Eagle jeans ad, the "Euphoria" star didn't miss her latest red carpet event. Sweeney, 27, on Sunday stepped out at a screening of her new movie "Americana" in Los Angeles, wearing a pale yellow dress and matching headband. |
Why was the ad controversial? The American Eagle ad campaign featuring Sweeney features a play on words in the tagline: "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans." "Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue," Sweeney says in the ad. Critics have objected to the portrayal of a conventionally attractive, blonde, white woman with blue eyes as the archetype of desirable genetics, while supporters say that interpretation is overblown and out of touch. 👉 Sweeney has yet to comment on the backlash. |
The president weighs in: President Donald Trump, a former reality TV star, said he liked the controversial ad, and Sweeney, only after he found out that the actress is reportedly a registered Republican in his home state of Florida. 👉 What Trump said about Sweeney. | Sydney Sweeney attends a screening of her film "Americana" on Sunday in Los Angeles. The quadruple shooting took place on Friday at The Owl Bar in the rural town of Anaconda in Deer Lodge County. The four victims were local residents ranging from 59-75 years old, including a 64-year-old woman who tended the bar. Brown, 45, was last seen leaving the bar after the shooting. 👉 What to know about the shooting. |
