Hi! Rebecca Morin here. August is finally here, and I'm going to start counting down the days until I see Bad Bunny in Puerto Rico later this month!

Texas Democrats leave state to block redistricting vote

Democratic lawmakers in Texas have a message for their Republican counterparts: Don't mess with the state's congressional districts. Democratic state lawmakers left the state to deny Republicans the quorum on Monday needed to redraw the state's 38 congressional districts. The move is an attempt by Republicans to protect the party's narrow House majority in next year's midterm elections. President Donald Trump has backed Texas' redistricting plan.

Democratic state Rep. James Talarico said in a video shot in front of an airport that the redistricting plan amounted to "rigging" the 2026 elections. The state lawmakers flew to Illinois, Albany, New York and Boston. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, has threatened to remove Democratic lawmakers from the state's House of Representatives who fail to return by Monday afternoon. What to know about the redistricting plan.

A call to push back: California's Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla said his party should be willing to fight fire with fire as Republicans try to push through Texas' controversial gerrymandering plans. In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Padilla said Republicans are "not confident on their policy agenda" and  "know they're in trouble" with voters. "And so they're trying to rig the system to hold on to power," Padilla said of the redistricting plan.

A narrow Congress: Can Republicans maintain control of Congress in next year's midterm elections? Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. And precedent has shown that the party that does not hold the White House fares better in midterm congressional elections. Eleven states, including North Carolina, Michigan, Georgia and Texas, will have Senate races that you will want to watch in the 2026 midterms.

A paved Rose Garden

The White House got a little Mar-a-Lago flair. The Rose Garden, which has hosted countless presidential affairs since its 1913 inception, was recently paved over at the direction of Trump. Rose bushes and other vegetation remain on the garden's periphery. The president said he's hearing "great reviews" about his controversial overhaul, saying that the manicured lawn presented problems when hosting events. The new Rose Garden patio resembles a patio at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's resort and home in Florida. Why Trump remodeled the Rose Garden.

Did Trump remove the Rose Garden? He has pushed these White House renovations.

Sydney Sweeney's jeans add controversy

President Donald Trump has weighed into on actress Sydney Sweeney's much-debated jeans ad campaign. He said he's a big fan of the ad and the actress – only after hearing she's a registered Republican. "She's a registered Republican?" Trump said. "Oh, now I love her ad. Is that right? You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans." The American Eagle ad campaign featuring the "Euphoria" actress relies on a play on words ‒ "jeans" and "genes"‒ to describe the 27-year-old. Critics have said the jeans campaign amounts to a dog whistle for eugenics and a glorification of whiteness. What Trump said about Sweeney.
