👋🏼 Hi there! I'm Phaedra Trethan , back again for The Short List. Apologies for hitting your inbox twice, we inadvertently sent today's Short List without an updated subject line!

As Israel marks two years since the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas, hopes are growing for peace.

But first: I don't want to talk about the Phillies. ⚾️ 😖 It might be time to turn my attention to the Flyers as the puck drops on the National Hockey League season. 🏒

Is it free speech or harmful counseling?

The U.S. Supreme Court is weighing whether states can block therapists from trying to change a young person's gender or sexual identity.

What is the case about? A Christian counselor says a Colorado ban on "conversion therapy" violates her right to free speech. The state's 2019 law cited "overwhelming evidence" that the therapy harms young people's mental health, increasing their risk of depression and suicide. What's at stake for minors.

A somber, sad anniversary

Israelis marked the second anniversary of the Hamas attacks on their country that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, with Hamas taking 251 people hostage. The ensuing conflict has left Gaza, the Hamas stronghold, in ruins, with tens of thousands dead and even more without food, medical care or other necessities.

Negotiating an end: There is hope for peace as both Israel and Hamas find themselves isolated, their people tired of war and the international community calling for the remaining hostages to be freed and for the people of Gaza to be spared further misery. Where talks stand.

'We are bruised and battle-weary': One mother's grief, and her prayers for healing.

Brrrr! (For some, at least)

Your humble newsletter writer lives in New Jersey, where today it's in the low 80s and we're fighting our instinct to turn on the AC. But the literal winds of change are coming to large swaths of the country.

A new season: Frost and freeze alerts , which signify the end of the growing season for millions of farmers and gardeners, stretch from Idaho to Michigan. A cold front is moving east, with temperatures dropping across the region.

In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Jerry could become a hurricane soon.
And the seasonal moon means higher tides, which could lead to coastal flooding in some areas.
