Government shutdown, Day 1

A bitter standoff is underway, with no immediate end in sight. President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers are trading blame for the government shutdown, which began at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday after federal funding lapsed. 👉 Lawmakers don't know how long the shutdown will last.

What's the hold up for a deal? Democrats on Capitol Hill are demanding health care policy changes that President Donald Trump and Republicans say they can't go along with. Remembering Jane Goodall

Legendary chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall has died at 91. The Jane Goodall Institute, the conservation organization she founded, said in a statement Goodall died of natural causes while she was in California on a cross-country speaking tour.

Goodall's legacy: Goodall rose to fame in part through a National Geographic documentary about her fieldwork on chimpanzees. She used her science celebrity status to advance conservation efforts for chimpanzees and other endangered species. 👉 More on Goodall's career.

A partial building collapse in New York

A 20-story public housing building partially collapsed Wednesday along a ventilation shaft down to the boiler room in the South Bronx. Firefighters are investigating it as a possible gas explosion.
