New York Democrats rally around Letitia James

New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday on charges of bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution by a federal grand jury in Virginia, the Department of Justice announced.

The context: The indictment comes less than three weeks after President Donald Trump publicly called for her to face charges and marks the second prosecution of Trump's perceived enemies.

Who is James? James has served as New York State Attorney General since 2019, winning the office in 2018, and is the first woman of color to hold statewide office in New York and the first woman to be elected AG.
James won a civil case against Trump. James sued Trump, his businesses and some of his family in 2022, alleging they fraudulently inflated the value of his assets for better loan and insurance terms.
What this means: Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement that Trump, with the help of Attorney General Pam Bondi, had turned the Justice Department into a shield to protect his allies and a sword to attack his opponents.

Could a shutdown tip Virginia's governor race?

Democrats hope simmering frustrations over federal worker cuts and an ongoing government shutdown will boil over in their favor in the Virginia governor's race, one of this year's most consequential elections. Virginia's gubernatorial contest is often regarded as the first national referendum on the current president's agenda

Meanwhile, Democratic and Republican-backed spending bills failed in the Senate yesterday — for the seventh time.

National Guard deployments face legal tests

Legal battles continue across the country over President Trump's mobilization of National Guard to American cities.

Here's the latest:

In Chicago, a federal judge decided to grant in part Illinois' request to block the deployment of troops to the nation's third-largest city.
In San Francisco, three judges on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals appeared skeptical of Oregon's arguments that Trump's deployment of National Guard troops was unlawful and unwarranted.
Meanwhile, leaders in Memphis announced Tennessee National Guard troops will begin patrolling the city on Friday.

Feel like you're in a recession?

It could be where you live. Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia, which contribute about a third of U.S. economic activity, are already in a recession, according to Moody's Analytics economist Mark Zandi. Another 13 states, comprising roughly another third of the economy, are treading water, and the remaining 16 are growing, he said. Even if the nation isn't in a recession, if you live in one of the states that's either in a recession or on the edge of one, you're likely already feeling a pinch. See your state.

The Dodgers are threatening to go where no National League team has gone in nearly 50 years: Winning back-to-back World Series. The Dodgers knocked off the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1, in 11 innings Thursday, winning the NL Division Series in four games, and now advance to the National League Championship Series to face the winner of the Milwaukee Brewers-Chicago Cubs series Monday. It was an epic pitching duel, but ended on perhaps the biggest blunder to end a postseason game.
