RIP, repeal and replace

Just in case "nobody knew that health care could be so complicated," as President Trump complained in February, everyone does now. Republicans' last-ditch effort on health care is dead. After seven years of promising to expunge President Barack Obama's signature domestic initiative — a commitment that helped the GOP take control first of the House and the Senate and finally of the White House — Republicans are left with hard choices about what to do now. Like how to explain this to voters.

FBI calls flagrant foul on basketball coaches and associates

Bribery is not a sanctioned move in the NCAA or NBA playbook. The FBI on Tuesday indicted multiple college assistant basketball coaches, employees at Adidas, an NBA agent, a financial adviser and a former NBA official for allegedly participating in a fraud and corruption scheme . Why? The federal investigation found alleged bribes were offered to potential student-athletes, plus kickbacks made to assistant coaches from advisers. Who's involved? So far, Auburn, Southern California, Arizona, Louisville and Oklahoma State. Federal prosecutor Joon Kim said to expect the list to grow as the investigation continues. "We have your playbook."

Puerto Rico is part of the U.S., so why aren't we acting like it?

Civics lesson: Puerto Rico is a U.S. commonwealth, but a USA TODAY/Suffolk University poll shows fewer than half of all Americans believe that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens by birth. (Hint: They are.) President Trump will visit the storm-torn island next week , but without more support from the American public, it will be a tough road to recovery after Hurricane Maria. The good news: There are plenty of ways to help.

Breaking up is hard to do: Antarctica Edition

Year after year, Antarctica crumbles, literally losing parts of itself in massive chunks. The latest: An iceberg the size of three Manhattans. The 71.5-square-mile ice mass broke free just two months after Antarctica uncoupled with 2,200 square miles of its former self.  At least one researcher expects the frequent ice losses to continue, calling the pattern "not a good sign." Spoiler: Warming water and temperatures are widely accepted as causes of deteriorating ice shelves.

These are the 100 best companies for working moms — but how good are they really?

What do working moms want (besides more coffee and for Mary Poppins to be listed on care.com)? Working Mother magazine says companies that offer schedule flexibility, generous paid parental leave and mentoring programs are key. In its list of the 100 best companies for women , 10 weeks of paid maternity leave is the average (that's up a week from nine last year). Yay? Many moms say a 10-week-old is too young to be apart from their mother all day, and yet 10 weeks is better than most U.S. companies allow. Only 30% offer any paid parental leave at all. That's a problem that even more coffee can't solve.

Great, now we can't talk about football

Remember when sports was a way to steer a conversation away from politics? President Trump on Tuesday asked the NFL to create a rule forcing players to stand for the national anthem. Taking a knee started as a protest of racial injustice, but has recently become a protest of Trump, too. While many Americans don't like the demonstration, a majority don't want to see players fired for it. But it's complicated. Case in point: Pittsburgh offensive lineman Alejandro Villanueva. His jerseys flew off the shelves after he was the only Steelers player to stand Sunday during the anthem. Later he  apologized for making his "teammates look bad," saying he felt like he "threw them under the bus." We're currently seeking new topics to discuss over dinner.
