Millions of Americans are suffering from hurricanes and need our help

Forecasters said the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season would be above average, though we couldn't have imagined how catastrophic it would be. Hurricane Irma barreled into Florida Sunday and millions of people are without power. Irma earlier chewed through a string of Caribbean islands, causing massive damage there. Before that, Hurricane Harvey plowed into Texas in late August, causing major flooding in Houston, Beaumont and Port Arthur and projected to be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history. Next up is Hurricane Jose , which weather models suggest could move toward the East Coast, but any direct hit — if it does make landfall — won't happen until next week. Here's how to help hurricane victims.

9/11: America pledges to never forget

It's been 16 years since the world watched in horror as airliners crashed into both towers of New York City's World Trade Center, the Pentagon outside Washington and a field in Shanksville, Pa., killing 2,977 people. The country came together again Monday to remember that tragic day, and President Trump honored the victims of the deadliest foreign attack on U.S. soil, pledging "never to forget them." Since the attack on Sept. 11, 2001,  the country's partisan divide has grown even deeper and wider. The chairmen of the 9/11 Commission say we still aren't close to winning against the terrorist threat. Here are 10 things you may have forgotten about the attacks.

Many hailed President Trump's announcement that he would declare the opioid epidemic a national emergency as an important step in battling the deadly problem. That was four weeks ago. On Monday, a group of 10 Democratic senators wrote to Trump asking , "What's the holdup?" They stressed the urgency of the overdose crisis, made worse by the rise of the super potent synthetic opioid, Fentanyl. Some families are fighting to have addicted loved ones involuntarily committed into treatment. Others, who have lost family to opioid addiction, are sharing the cause of death in their obituaries to help highlight the problem.

NFL is back, and so are overreaction Mondays

The Seattle Seahawks stink. Matthew Stafford will win MVP honors. The Cleveland Browns are for real . It's the return of Monday morning quarterback, where NFL fans push back on overreactions taking shape for their favorite teams after the weekend's slate. Are NFL openers important, you ask? Well, yes — teams that go 1-0 are twice as likely to reach the postseason than teams who start 0-1. If you missed the exciting football action, catch up with the 40 things we learned from Week 1
