Major buzzkill for legal pot party |
No sooner had many Californians taken their first toke of legal marijuana than Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the Justice Department announced that federal law enforcement will no longer "just say no" when it comes to challenging state laws permitting pot use. Sessions is rescinding an Obama administration policy of looking the other way, which Justice officials say created a "de facto safe haven" for the weed business to grow to new heights. Details on the new policy are hazy, and that uncertainty could roil investors in an industry already paranoid about its future. |
Traveling today? We're so sorry |
Whiteout conditions at New York's JFK airport. At LaGuardia, 90% of flights, canceled. More than 700 cancellations at Boston's Logan airport. Air travelers were in for a long day as Thursday's massive winter "bomb cyclone" moved up the East Coast. Weather watches and warnings stretched 1,000 miles, from North Carolina to Maine. Bombogenesis — the process that produces a bomb cyclone — happens when a storm's central barometric pressure drops at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. The lower the pressure, the more powerful the storm. This storm's pressure dropped 53 millibars in 21 hours, which ranks it among the most explosive East Coast storms ever. |
Democracy in action: Virginia race decided by pulling a name from a ceramic bowl |
Just a reminder that every single vote counts. The race for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates between Republican incumbent David Yancey and Democratic challenger Shelly Simonds has bounced back and forth since the November election. It finally came down to drawing a name from a ceramic bowl. The battle for the $18,000-a-year job drew national attention and despite Thursday's dramatic finale, it may not actually be over. Simonds could still press for a recount or challenge the decision in court. With a Yancey win, the GOP retains its 51-49 majority. |

Yes, holiday shopping was fun. But that's over, and Macy's is moving forward with plans to close dozens of stores and slash thousands of jobs. Macy's identified seven more locations Thursday that it will shutter, as part of its plan announced in August 2016 to close 100 stores. The company has revealed 81 of the locations. Itching for a deal as the stores close? Liquidation sales are likely to begin next week as these locations shut down: |
• | Miami (downtown) | • | The Oaks, Gainesville, Fla. | • | Novato (furniture), Novato, Calif. | • | Honey Creek Mall, Terre Haute, Ind. | • | Birchwood Mall, Fort Gratiot Township, Mich. | • | Fountain Place, Cincinnati | • | Burlington Town Center, Burlington, Vt. | |
