The Oscars go further. Though, some say not far enough.

Progress? Maybe.

This year's Oscar nominations come as Hollywood — and American culture at large — grapples with multiple calls for change. The Me Too and Time's Up movements have brought attention to the mistreatment of women, and in the last few years #OscarsSoWhite has pushed for greater racial and gender diversity among nominees. So what happened with the noms announced Tuesday? Women's names turned up in categories where they rarely have been seen, but Asians and Latinos were shut out of acting categories. James Franco, star of the critically acclaimed The Disaster Artist, was notably absent from the best actor list amid recent allegations of sexually inappropriate and exploitative behaviors. But Kobe Bryant, who was arrested in 2003 for sexual assault and settled out of court, was nominated in the best animated short category for Dear Basketball. History was made this year, but many say the Academy, and the country, still have a long way to go.

Ranking the best and the worst of the world

Denmark is the spot for raising children, Sweden is for living environmentally sound, and the United States has the most unpopular world leader, according to the new U.S. News and World Report rankings of the best countries. The global survey  found more people disapproved of President Trump than they did Russian President Vladimir Putin, allowing Trump take home the title. Switzerland's ability to juggle capitalism and human rights once again earned it the title of world's best country.

'This is a wound that will take a long time to heal'

A 15-year-old opened fire on students in a rural Kentucky high school Tuesday,  killing two students and injuring 17 others. The shooting happened in a common area before classes started at Marshall County High School. The gunman did not appear to target specific people, authorities said, but killed a girl and a boy, both 15. The suspect was taken into custody and will be charged with murder. "To walk in, the backpacks laying around. The phones laying around, going off ... it's indescribable," said Marshall (Ky.) County Attorney Jeff Edwards.

Some surprising news about Millennials

Millennials are bucking negative perceptions about them and socking away money for retirement. Not bad for a generation that is tied to massive student debt and entered the working world during a devastating financial crisis. A new Bank of America survey found 16% of Millennials have more than $100,000 in savings, that's double what young people had put away in 2015. All that savings may mean Millennials, those ages 23 to 37, have become better with money. Perhaps more important, about half of Millennials say they have a budget.

Did the dog get a flu shot?

In the midst of a brutal human flu outbreak, dogs are passing along a remarkably similar infection. It's called dog flu, or canine influenza , and packs many of the same nasty symptoms as human flu: fever, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and exhaustion. (Humans can't catch it, if you're wondering.) Some cases have been deadly, but most clear up after three weeks. Pet owners concerned about dog flu can talk to their veterinarian about a vaccine.
