Paris rocked by riots for third straight weekend |
Charred cars, broken windows and downed fences littered central Paris on Sunday, a day after the city was hit by France's worst riot in a generation . Protesters trashed the capital's streets in a demonstration against rising taxes and the high cost of living, leading to 133 injuries and 412 arrests, according to police. It was France's worst urban violence since at least 2005 and the third straight weekend of clashes in Paris after protests began Nov. 17 over a fuel tax hike. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the graffiti-damaged Arc de Triomphe monument Sunday and held an emergency meeting on security, vowing that those responsible for the violence and damages will pay for their actions. |
Cohen seeks no prison time in memo pointing to Trump |
Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's ex-personal lawyer, asked a federal judge to spare him prison time for his guilty pleas in crimes that implicated his former boss in questionable actions or potential illegality. Expressing repentance, contrition and shame in a sentencing memo filed late Friday , the 52-year-old former fixer for the president cited his continuing cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation Trump has angrily branded a "witch hunt" in numerous statements and tweets. Cohen's sentencing memo depicts Trump as far more involved in plans for building a Trump Tower in Moscow than the president has previously asserted publicly, allegations Trump denies. |
George H.W. Bush dead at 94 |
The president who managed the end of the Cold War and lived to see his son win the Oval Office has died at age 94. The death of George Hebert Walker Bush — nicknamed "41" to distinguish himself from son George W. Bush, "43" — was announced late Friday. His death comes months after the passing of his wife of 73 years, Barbara, who died in April. Bush began the last day of his life with three eggs for breakfast and ended it by telling his son George W. Bush that he loved him. His body will lie in state next week at the Capitol ahead of a state funeral Wednesday at the Washington National Cathedral. Read the gracious letter Bush left for his successor and rival, Bill Clinton. |
US the only G-20 holdout on climate change |
President Donald Trump on Saturday signed a joint statement following a summit in which world leaders affirmed a commitment to global trade reform but disagreed with the United States on climate change. Nineteen members at the the Group of 20 summit committed to implementing the Paris climate accord, but the statement noted the decision by the U.S. to withdraw from the agreement. Trump withdrew last year to honor a campaign pledge, though his administration reports that climate change impacts to the U.S. are intensifying — claims Trump says he doesn't believe. At the summit, Trump also managed an "informal" meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. |
Chiefs release star player after video of him kicking a woman |
Running back Kareem Hunt was released by the Kansas City Chiefs and placed on the commissioner's exempt list Friday night, hours after TMZ's publishing of a February video showing him shoving and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel . Hunt "was not truthful" in internal discussions with Chiefs management, the team said in a statement, leading to his release. Hunt won't be allowed to practice or play for any team as the NFL investigates the incident. Hunt said in a statement that he hopes "to move on from this," leading to the question: Will he face the same fate as Ray Rice? Rice never played in the NFL again after video of him punching a woman surfaced four years ago. Also in football: Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma made the College Football Playoff field. |
Alaskans recover from earthquake amid aftershocks |
Dozens of smaller temblors shook parts of Alaska on Saturday as officials in Anchorage continued recovery efforts after experiencing the most significant earthquake to impact the state's biggest city in decades. No deaths or serious injuries were reported in Friday's magnitude 7.0 earthquake, but the Anchorage area suffered serious damage from the quake that sliced opened roads, knocked out power and damaged buildings. Anchorage utility companies are scrambling to restore power to about 30,000 customers. |
Waffle House hero replaces Kid Rock |
James Shaw Jr. replaced Kid Rock as the grand marshal of the Nashville's annual Christmas parade. Shaw, the hero of Nashville's Waffle House shooting, became a last-minute substitute for grand marshal on Saturday, stepping in for musician Kid Rock after he was ousted by sponsors for insulting television personality Joy Behar on live television on Friday morning. Uncertainty about who would be grand marshal continued up until the moments before the parade. As the show began, Shaw hopped into a horse drawn carriage alongside relatives of Akilah Dasilva, a musician who was killed in the shooting. |
