The loss that forever changed former president George H.W. Bush

In a fascinating analysis, USA TODAY Washington Bureau chief (and Barbara Bush biographer) Susan Page provides rich insight into how the illness and death of young Bush daughter Pauline Robinson Bush (Robin) impacted the political and personal trajectory of the Bushes.

An excerpt: "The experience taught them a terrible lesson about the ways the innocent can be caught and crushed by life's unfairness. It left a stamp about what matters, and what doesn't. It fueled George Bush's determination to do something big in life, beyond the oil business he was building in Texas. After he became president decades later, it helped shape his policies toward the epidemic of HIV/AIDS."  Keep reading here.

Millennials are getting worse deals on loans and credit cards

We blame Millennials for a lot. They're not buying houses like they once did. They're not getting married — or divorced — like in the past. And they're not building up credit like generations in the past. But, is that their fault?

An excerpt: "Unlike older generations, many millennials are reluctant to take on new debt even as their finances improve, according to new research from VantageScore provided exclusively to USA TODAY. The problem is lenders still consider these conservative borrowers with fewer credit accounts as riskier. As a result, these debt-shy millennials likely get worse loan terms, like higher interest rates and lower credit-card limits when they do apply." Americans are continuing their ugly breakup with cars

Why buy a car when you could buy a … pick-up truck? November car sales are showing some pretty different consumer preferences. Three words: four wheel drive.

An excerpt: "One consistent trend is fading demand for cars. Sales of compacts fell 18.4 percent in November and sales of midsize cars declined 15 percent, according to Cox Automotive. But sales of compact SUVs and crossovers rose 11.6 percent and sales of midsize SUVs and crossovers increased 11.7 percent." Keep reading here.

Christmas classic, or creepy relic of a bygone era?

More radio stations are banning the 1944 Christmas song 'Baby It's Cold Outside,' to some very mixed reactions.

An excerpt: "Those against the song say it promotes date rape, describing a man pressuring a woman to stay despite her adamantly telling him 'no, no, no.' Other lyrics like 'say, what's in this drink?' have also raised eyebrows" Keep reading here.

Lance Armstrong just doesn't get it

Is anyone besides Lance Armstrong on Lance Armstrong's side these days? Six years after he admitted to doping, the disgraced cyclist went on the Today show Thursday to talk about life today. Or, in the words of USA TODAY Sports columnist Nancy Armour…

An excerpt: "That Armstrong thought he could cheat his way to success, debase and destroy his critics, yet get a pass because of the good he did for cancer patients was the height of hubris. That is why so many people can't forgive him. Six years after his grand confession, Armstrong still doesn't get it. It's not about the cheating. It's about him." Keep reading here.
