Who are 'The Guardians'? We know them as journalists
Long day? Short List: Kathie Lee Gifford says goodbye to 'Today', Trump clashes with Dems over border wall and more.

In Tuesday's Short List: Time magazine announced Person(s) of the Year, Trump's threatens to shut down the government over his border wall and the Charlottesville attacker faces a life sentence.

But first: Still ordering Christmas gifts? Double-check those send-by shipping deadlines, or prepare for coal in your stocking.

Time's Person of the Year: 'The Guardians'

Time magazine's Person of the Year award is going to several persons, in fact. Meet the journalists described by Time as "The Guardians," all of whom have been targeted for their work:

Jamal Khashoggi: The Washington Post columnist and frequent critic of Saudi Arabia was killed shortly after visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in early October.
The Capital Gazette: Five members of the newsroom in Annapolis, Maryland, were killed in June when a gunman blasted his way into their newsroom.
Maria Ressa: The editor of an independent news site in the Philippines  was indicted last month on tax evasion charges after criticism of president Rodrigo Duterte's administration.
Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo: Myanmar sentenced the Reuters reporters to seven years in prison for breaching a state act after their reporting on a massacre of 10 Rohingya men by security forces in 2017.

Your thoughts: See what readers are saying about Time magazine's choice.

A shutdown over the wall? Trump would be 'proud'

In a tense on-camera clash, President Donald Trump told Democratic leaders he would be "proud" to shut down the federal government if he doesn't get $5 billion for his wall on the Mexican border . Trump said the wall would stop criminals and drug dealers from entering the country; House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y, disagreed. At one point, Schumer said the president shouldn't threaten to shut down the government "because you can't get your way." But as a shutdown looms, one detail's still unsettled: Is the border wall actually being built?

Today in Trump, too: Porn star Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels, must pay Trump's lawyers nearly $300,000 in fees related to her failed defamation claim, a California judge said.

The Charlottesville jury is in

A jury in Charlottesville, Virginia, recommended a white nationalist serve the rest of his life in prison – plus 419 years – for murdering a woman after a "Unite the Right" rally last year. James Alex Fields Jr. drove his car into a group of counterprotesters, killing Heather Heyer , a 32-year-old paralegal and civil rights activist, and injuring dozens. Judge Richard Moore accepted the jury's verdicts and said he will formally sentence Fields on March 29.

Another high-profile case: A former Baylor University fraternity president accused of rape will serve no jail time after accepting a plea deal. It's at least the third time Judge Ralph Strother has approved probation for men accused of sexually assaulting Baylor students.

Kathie Lee bids tearful goodbye to 'Today'

Longtime 'Today' show host Kathie Lee Gifford is leaving the show and co-host Hoda Kotb. Gifford has been with the show for almost 11 years and said the primary reason she stayed so long was because she loved her coworkers. Gifford will focus on other projects, she said, though her replacement has not been determined
