10 wounded in New Orleans shooting rampage; no arrests made

A shooting rampage near the famed French Quarter of New Orleans early Sunday left 10 people wounded, revelers from an annual football game scrambling for cover and police in pursuit of at least one "cowardly" gunman. Two of the injured were hospitalized in critical condition. That's according to NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson, who said one person was detained near the scene but did not yet know what role, if any, the person had in the shooting. No arrests had been made. A heavy police presence had been in the area because the annual Bayou Classic football game  between Grambling State University and Southern University was played Saturday, Ferguson said.

9 people killed, three injured in South Dakota plane crash

Authorities say nine people were killed and three were injured Saturday after a single-engine plane crashed in South Dakota . The plane bound for Idaho — a Pilatus PC-12 — had 12 people on board when it crashed shortly after taking off from Chamberlain, said Peter Knudson with the National Transportation Safety Board. The ages of the passengers ranged from 7 to 81, and two children were among the fatalities, according to officials. Chamberlain and central south-central South Dakota were under a winter storm warning at the time of the plane crash. An investigation into the crash was delayed Sunday by harsh winter weather.

Winter storms trigger travel headaches in 30 states

An unrelenting winter storm was marching east from the Plains and Midwest on Sunday as weary Thanksgiving weekend travelers made their way home . "Heavy snow will continue to plaster the upper Mississippi Valley and northern Great Lakes region into Sunday night," AccuWeather warned. "Strong winds will make for whiteout conditions at times." AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alan Reppert said Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey were seeing some of the worst weather Sunday morning – ice, snow and wind. In the Northeast, a powerful nor'easter was colliding with cold air to trigger the first heavy snow of the year from New Jersey to Boston. Some areas could get an inch an hour starting Sunday afternoon and lasting into Monday, the weather service said.

Auburn takes down No. 5 Alabama in Iron Bowl, ending the Crimson Tide's playoff hopes

A one-of-a-kind Iron Bowl knocked Alabama out of contention for one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff and left Utah potentially one victory away from a Playoff berth . Before Auburn's 48-45 victory Saturday night, the Crimson Tide had appeared in the semifinals in all five years since the system started in 2014. The loss knocked the Tide out of the top five in the Amway Coaches Poll for the first time since 2015 and left Alabama coach Nick Saban fuming about what he called an "unfair" game-ending penalty after the Tide was called for having too many men on the field with 1:06 remaining in the game. A penalty gave Auburn a first down, and the Tigers were able to run out the clock. With Alabama out, Utah can make its case for the Playoff by beating Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game. Then the final spot should come down to the Utes or the Big 12 championship's Oklahoma-Baylor winner.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in Michigan

Two Midwestern states are breaking into the recreational marijuana market, and dispensaries are expecting huge crowds. Legal weed sales began Sunday in Michigan, a landmark moment in the state's cannabis industry. In Illinois, where officials are grappling with a lack of racial equity in the cannabis industry, sales are expected to begin New Year's Day. The states are the 10th and 11th nationwide to allow recreational marijuana sales. Thirty-three states allow the sale of marijuana for medical use, which Michigan legalized in 2008, followed by Illinois in 2013. Anyone over the age of 21 with a valid state ID or driver's license can purchase recreational marijuana from licensed retailers.
