Elsa rages on as it nears the Sunshine State |
| "Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion," the National Hurricane Center advised, as it issued a hurricane warning along Florida's west coast on Tuesday while Tropical Storm Elsa spun past Key West and into the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. With millions of people under hurricane watches or warnings, meteorologists say the storm could regain hurricane strength before making landfall in the Sunshine State. Life-threatening storm surges, flooding and isolated tornadoes also were possible, the advisory warned. With Elsa forecast to make landfall north of Tampa on Wednesday morning, Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency for more than two dozen of the state's 67 counties. |

Desperate search for survivors of condo collapse continues |
| Bands of rain from an approaching tropical storm and a forecast that includes possible tornadoes added to the hurdles faced by rescue workers seeking signs of life Tuesday among the ruins of the Miami-area condominium collapse . Four more bodies were found, raising the death toll to 36, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said. She said 26 of the victims had been identified, and 113 people remain unaccounted for, although "only around 70 of those are people we have been able to confirm were in fact in the building" when it fell. Authorities remained steadfast in describing the effort as search and rescue, 12 days after the stunning collapse at the Champlain Towers South in Surfside, a few miles north of Miami Beach. The remaining sections of the building were imploded Sunday amid concerns that winds from approaching Tropical Storm Elsa would topple the structure and bring the rescue to a halt. |

Biden unveils new vaccine efforts |
| Amid concerns over the spread of the delta variant of COVID-19, President Joe Biden unveiled new initiatives aimed at the one-third of the eligible U.S. population that has not gotten any COVID-19 vaccine shots . During a speech on Tuesday, the president lauded the progress the nation has made against the coronavirus while cautioning against the highly transmissible delta variant. Biden also said that by the end of the week, the U.S. is expected to have fully vaccinated 160 million residents, more than 55% of the eligible population. "We are emerging from one of the darkest years in our nation's history into a summer of hope and joy,'' Biden said. "We can't get complacent now." |

| Citing the pop icon's intent to "officially retire" from music, Britney Spears' longtime manager reportedly announced his resignation in a letter to her conservators. Longtime manager Larry Rudolph submitted his formal resignation after he "became aware that Britney had been voicing her intention to officially retire," saying he last communicated with Spears more than two and a half years ago, "at which time she informed me she wanted to take an indefinite work hiatus." She has not performed since January 2019. Spears spoke out in court against her conservatorship last month, and last week, a judge denied her request to have her father removed as sole conservator for now. A day later, wealth management firm Bessemer Trust resigned as co-conservator of her finances. |

White man who pushed Black neighbor during racist rant arrested |
| After a video of him yelling racial slurs at a Black neighbor sparked an anti-racism protest at his home, Edward Cagney Mathews, who is white, was arrested on charges of harassment and bias intimidation in New Jersey. Mathews was seen in a widely circulated video pushing a neighbor with his chest and using racist slurs before giving his full address and challenging the person filming him to visit his home. Residents of the South Jersey town and beyond took him up on the invitation Monday. A loud but peaceful crowd of about 150 gathered for hours outside Mathews' home, chanting "Black Lives Matter" and "This is what community looks like." Mathews was arrested Monday on charges of harassment and bias intimidation. Police say they are investigating other incidents involving Matthews and expecting more protests Tuesday. |
