The last 24 hours have not lacked excitement at the Tokyo Olympics, but the focus remains on Simone Biles. |
Biles will not be the first woman to win back-to-back all-around Olympic titles since 1968 after USA Gymnastics said Biles will not compete in the event so she can focus on her mental health. Arizona native Jade Carey will replace her in the final. This comes after Biles pulled out of the team final after one event Tuesday. |
Not much is clear about Biles' situation going forward, and Biles and gymnasts know that mental health issues can lead to catastrophe when competing. |
Biles, 24, returned for her second Olympics as a favorite to win gold in five events, but cited the stress of competing as a contributing factor. "It just sucks when you're fighting with your own head," she said. |

After withdrawing from the women's all-around final, Biles cheered on the team as they eventually won silver. On Wednesday night, she arrived early to watch the men's all-around final to cheer on Sam Mikulak and Brody Malone. |
